Project Mania

How many projects can the Hollingsworth family possibly do in one week? Plus, do regular homework, attend meetings, play ball, go to therapy, visit the orthodontist, and go to work... AND, Chuck has been taking finals and writing papers!

Noah's project was to create a 3D robot using a rectangular prism, cube, cone, cylinder, and sphere. (Bonus shapes could also be included.) It was to be completed at home using household objects and his creative mind!
He even wanted his robot to have a "jet pack." I think it turned out really cute... the robot will debut at HES tomorrow!
Evan's project was a little more complicated. He was to create a balloon powered race car.
Here's a test run that took place in our kitchen...
The trick was to get enough air in the balloon for a maximum distance and speed.
I may be biased, but I thought it was pretty impressive!
The final product, ready for take off! After his test run, he attached a new balloon for the "at school competition" and named the car "The Blur"
Objectives for this assignment
Create a car for maximum speed and distance; incorporate Newton's Law of Motion; learn how to use the formula Speed=Distance/Time

Rules for this assignment
  • The car must be powered by no more than (2) 12 in. balloons
  • The car can be no longer than 6 in.
  • Build out of anything around the house
  • Must have at least 3 wheels
  • Wheels cannot be wheels from a toy car -  must be made out of something that wasn't originally meant to be used as wheels
  • Car may not leave the ground
  • Must travel at least 3 meters (approximately 10 feet)
Evan's car was made from:
  • The body of the car was a plastic solo cup cut in half and lined with red felt
  • The wheels were plastic practice golf balls
  • The axle was made from skewers and the wheels were attached to the axle with washers and rubber bands
  • The balloon was attached to a hard plastic straw (from a souvenir cup) that was cut to fit in the base of the cup/car

Nice job, huh? He got a 100 for his project!!
